People lie to themselves constantly. I guess it's a way to survive, but it sure is a dishonest way to live.
Truly smart people are the ones most prone to depression, because their own intelligence is what makes them incapable of just "throwing away" negative thoughts and then blindly clinging on to lies. The average joe, on the other hand, has a knack for deceiving himself about his flaws.
That self-dishonesty is, I suspect, the source of most of the friction in human relations. Cognitive dissonance is literally painful for humans, and people will do anything -- up to and including murder -- to avoid facing it. "You disrespecting me? Are you DISRESPECTING me?!" -- that instinctive reaction is the nub of so much of what's wrong.
People need to learn to be honest with themselves. They need to immerse in their flaws, wallow in them, understand them, and accept them. Trying to "throw them away" just ensures future conflicts.
Evolution is the only thing that's going to change any of this. Hopefully someday humanity will fully consist of people willing to confront their own internal flaws and accept the pain. Because that will mean we finally have a population fully consisting of smart folks.
You are what you think, LITERALLY! So try to think only good thoughts, push away any negative thoughts, ie; those filled with fear, desire, hate, anger, paranoia, or jealousy. Try this as an exercise and soon you will see the world through different eyes!
Its absolutely true that we need to monitor and discard the garbage thats in our heads! We have all kinds of crappy 'tapes' that just continue to loop in our subconscious. When we get some conscious awareness of them we need to take note of them. Write them down if you like. Discard those that are destructive. There are many of them by the way. Sort of a vestige from childhood, etc.
So, only a man could know anything about men's health? Next time you urgently need a nurse, doctor, or paramedic and get a woman, be sure to decline their assistance and ask for a man.
I'm not exactly siding with this research, but there maybe some validity to this. We have always been told to visualize and write down our goals as well as modern psychology treatments often include keeping a written journal. Some of us chose to be on the vine to express our thoughts and discuss different topics as a way to socialize and "vent". I'm certainly going to try this... why not.. it seems a harmless exercise that could have some benefit..
This was not a fully blind test. The test subjects (only 83 of them) were given the choice as to whether the negative notes should be kept of thrown out. That very decision itself may reveal much about the test subjects real attitudes and level of optimism. Those who threw out their self-generated criticism may be less likely to take negative criticism or thoughts to heart than those who kept them.
I'm not saying such an exercise might not have some positive effect, only that, as conducted by PHD Richard Petty, this test proves nothing, except that nbcnews.com will print anything, if somebody with a doctoral degree proposes it.
You can also throw out your credit card bills and your mortgage payment slips, but that won't help, either. Just try that sometime. Also, don't pay your medical insurance, your doctor bills, your car insurance or your income taxes and see how many people start calling you and coming by your house. You'll become very popular!
It might work on people who are temporarily feeling blue and are otherwise happy-go-lucky people, but if you suffer from clinical depression, anorexia, or any other ACTUAL disorder, you could be doing this all day for the rest of your life and getting no relief from it, because it won't work.
My business is built on this very idea. Mad Tom's Wreck Room: where you take out your frustrations by smashing glassware against a steel wall. I am mobile, so if you are anywhere in the North East US, call me if you need me.
why am I still miserable?
I believe that sticking your head in the ground works like this too.
Yep. Ignorance really is bliss, apparently.

I tried it. Threw them all away, turned on the TV, and those politicians were still there.
Wars are still there too. Big or little actions we take can make the difference. Fake it till you make it.
I have successfully done this with my midnight worries--I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work with daytime thoughts as well.
Looks like I need to get myself a large trash can now
Interesting men's health article. Is Cassie Shortsleeve a dude's name?

What do we have to loose... negative thoughts?
Sigmund Freud was crazy, and psychology and psychiatry are pseudo-sciences.

Sometimes PHD does mean Piled Hire and Deeper.

It works. I do it all the time but I write it in an email and send it the devil@hell.com
