Hey! Did you guys know that meth is not good for pregnant women or their babies? We know. We'll give you a minute.
Reuters Health reported on the study today. After treating three pregnant woman -- all meth users -- for uncontrolled high blood pressure, Dr. Ido Solt of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and his colleagues decided to study methamphetamine abuse in pregnancy. They compared 276 meth-using women to 34,055 non-meth-using women, all of whom delivered babies at a Phoenix hospital from 2000 to 2006.
Solt and his team compared health factors such as preterm delivery and uncontrolled high blood pressure, and for almost every factor the researchers measured, the meth users and their babies fared worse. Shocking.
To be fair, meth is a serious problem -- for teens, men and women, pregnant or not -- and drug use in pregnancy is nothing to be flip about. But in case you were considering methamphetamine abuse as a new hobby during your pregnancy, maybe don't? It's just science.

Duh!!! That is all I have to say.
It didn't affect my pregnancy...oh, wait, I am a guy.
Nevermind.

We breathe air
They needed a study for this???
They didn't need to but as long as you had meth using mothers around you may as well.
Whoever allowed them to use money to do this study should be seriously bitch slapped. Can they not find better studies to do??
Serious. Maybe they should have used some of the money to help the mothers get OFF the meth instead of just sitting by watching them harm their unborn children, while taking notes on a clip-board and mumbling "Mm-hmmmm"
REALLY?!?!? NO!!! For real?!?! You gotta be joking... Meth is bad? ESPECIALLY for pregnant women? Gosh I didnt know that!!!!
Can people PLEASE start spending money in a more responsible manner, please?
No kidding, DUH!! Were the folks at Cedars-Sinai bored, or just all caught up on researching cures for cancer and stuff like that....?
And how much did this study cost us tax payers? To be told what a person already knows is a waste of money. Like the above poster, they must of been bored.
Im going to have to disagree here. I think a few good hits of meth gives babies more personality. These poor women are carrying these kids around for 9 months, the meth helps break up the monotony.
How about heroin? Is heroin okay? I think heroin be good, like vitamin H.
Does it harm adults that have tenants over their apartment smoking it all day long and night with holes drilled thru the floor and the smoke comes in thru my ceiling, and its all heresay so they won't check apartment, no one.
Does the entire scientific community think we are all brainless idiots and don't know this already! What a waste of money!!! I can think of dozens of other more important issues that should be looked at!!!!!
Geez, you guys, get a clue.
As long as you have meth addicted pregnant women, why not document EXACTLY what damage they are doing to their unborn children? We know it's bad, that is obvious. But if you can scientifically document exactly what harm they are doing, you are a lot closer to preventing it; you are a lot closer to trying to repair the damage, and you can use that data to beg gov't officials for prevention funds, you can use that data to show meth mamas in total denial what they are doing to their unborn kids.
The only good I could see from this study is that you could document the issues caused and then press charges against the women using this drug and poisoning their unborn children.
I agree with Dysphoria on this one. I would guess that it would be nearly impossible to get a pregnant woman using meth to stop abusing drugs during their pregnancy. They are already using it and most likely know that what they are doing is causing harm to them and their fetus. If the doctors start weighing down on them to stop then they will simply quit going to the doctor until they have to for delivery. At least this way they can monitor the women and document what is happening and use that information in the future.
I wonder if they got to keep the babies after they were born? I know someone who did Meth throughout the entire pregnancy and even tested positive at the doctors during her pregnancy and she got to keep the baby. Isn't that messed up?!?!?!!!
Dr. Ido Solt and his colleagues must have alot of time on their hands.
What they should research is using meth in low doses to enhance creativity which it certainly does. Of course this will never happen because of the all the pre-conceived notions that meth is a "bad" drug. But it really does have it's place and when used properly in low doses has many desirable effects.
It's easy to pick on the people who did this study, but coming from L.A., I can tell you that Meth is a major social problem. That women will choose to take meth when they're pregnant shows how addictive this drug is, up there with alcoholism - ever seen alcoholic fetal syndrome? Not pretty. But we need to identify these depressing things before we can cure them. Women carry the biological burden of reproduction for our species, they should be given extra medical because of that burden. There is no magic cure to get people of drugs & alcohol. I found that remark about "spending money to get the mothers OFF meth..." to be quite specious.
I would think that getting these mothers--and their newborns-- off meth would be a top priority for these researchers. If they wish to study meth and its effects then do so by admitting these mothers to rehab.
This is called "There is a lull in our funding...what can we study that we already know the answer to until a real project comes up?"
But is meth bad for pregnant men?
In a related story, the sky is blue and water is wet! Film at 11.
Meth, bad? Since when? I thought Meth was BENEFICIAL! How much money did you spend on this research? Because if it's more than $1, then I really don't trust my country....º-º
